Hidden Galleries project team member, Kinga Povedák, has published a new monograph on Christian rock music in Communist Hungary

Gitáros Apostolok (Guitarist Apostols) is the first book published in Hungarian on Christian rock music. Kinga Povedák describes the evolution of Christian rock music, the various trends within it and its place in Hungarian culture. Approached through the lens of the anthropology of music, the author analyses the culture of Christian rock music and its role in community and social life. In exploring the particularities of the socialist context in Hungary, this study draws on secret police surveillance files, whilst also explaining the various directions in which religious rock music evolved including the ‘pentecostalization’ process.
