This page from an MGB investigation file from 1947 from Soviet Moldavia shows three images of women preachers from the Archangelist movement, a branch of Inochentism. The first image portrays the women holding crosses in their right hand, facing the camera and cut off at waist height. The composition and symbolism of this image reproduce the visual language of icons. Images of this kind could offend the sensibilities of Orthodox believers. The two lower images carry the same imagery but in a less obvious way. The women are dressed conservatively in dark clothes that are inspired by monastic dress, a common practice among all branches of Inochentism.
The role of these photographs, which were found on the persons of the arrested individuals, were used by the secret police to both prove membership of the illegal religious group and to identify further members of the community. In the first image the central figure is identified by name as one of the significant women preachers of the group. In the lower two pictures, in a similar fashion, the secret police highlight certain individuals identified by name. Interrogation stenographs from other cases reveal that these types of images were produced by group members as mementos of group meetings.
We do not know the circumstances in which the photographs were taken, but from the setting and the quality we can suppose that the photographer was invited to the community. This type of photographic practice was common and it appears to be important for the Archangelists of this period. The leader of the movement, Alexandru Culeac, produced numerous photographs of himself in large numbers to distribute to his followers.
The Archangelist movement grew out of the earlier Inochentist movement in 1920s Bessarabia (present day Republic of Moldova) under Romanian rule and is one of a branches of the movement. It represents a form of local vernacular Orthodoxy drawing heavily on the conservative monastic tradition. When the territory of Bessarabia was (re)occupied by Soviet forces in 1944, Archangelists once again became a target due to their maintenance of values opposed to Soviet policies applied in the countryside. Accusations included resistance to mobilization to army, mass mobilization to work on Sundays, vote in elections, join the Communist Youth Organizations. In the context of collectivization of agriculture and the recent famine in Moldova, Archangelists shared a culture of apocalyptic rumor with many other religious groups in rural Russia and Ukraine.
Beside the above-mentioned photographs, the quoted file (ASIS, 019520, vol.2) contains two Archangelist-Inochentist icons, a photograph of an Archangelist hagiographic icon and one brochure.

Pagina prezentată este preluată dintr-un dosar al poliției secrete a Moldovei Sovietice și conține fotografiile confiscate ale unor grupuri de propovăduitoare arhangheliste. Prima fotografie reprezintă un grup de femei ce țin cruci în mână, și redă doar partea de sus a corpului lor. Compoziția și simbolismul acestei fotografii reproduc limbajul vizual iconografic tradițional. Acest tip de imagini poate fi ofensator pentru sensibilitățile credincioșilor ortodocși. Celelalte fotografii incluse în pagină au un efect vizual similar, dar mai puțin evident. Femeile sunt în îmbrăcăminte neagră inspirată de ținuta monastică, această practică fiind caracteristică Arhanghelismului și altor ramuri ale Inochentismului.
Fotografiile prezentate au fost confiscate de ofițerii poliției sovietice în cadrul percheziției peroanelor arestate, și au fost utilizate drept probă incriminatorie privind participarea la activități religioase ilegale și pentru identificarea membrilor rețelei de propovăduitori. În pagina de dosar este menționat numele femeii din centrul primei fotografii, care avea un rol deosebit în cadrul comunității. În același mod, ofițerii au menționat în pagină femeile din celelalte două fotografii. Stenogramele interogatoriilor din alte cazuri de urmărire penală intentate împotriva arhangheliștilor redau faptul că astfel de fotografii erau produse pentru a servi drept memorii ale întrunirilor religioase.
Nu cunoaștem circumstanțele în care fotografiile au fost produse, dar luând în considerare pe calitatea lor putem presupune că femeile din imagine au apelat la serviciile unui fotograf profesionist. Astfel de practici fotografice au fost răspândite în rândul arhangheliștilor acestei perioade, fapt care sugerează importanța lor în cultura arhanghelistă. Alexandru Culiac, liderul mișcării arhangheliste, apare în numeroase fotografii distribuite în cadrul comunității.
Mișcarea Arhanghelistă este o ramură a mișcării Inochentiste, apărut în Basarabia (în prezent Republica Moldova) în anii 1920, care reprezintă o variantă vernaculară a creștinismului ortodox influențată puternic de tradițiile monastice. Când teritoriul Basarabieie a fost (re)ocupat de Uniunea Sovietică în 1944, inochentiștii au devenit din nou o țintă a represiunii din cauza tradițiilor lor opuse politicilor regimului în mediul rural. Acuzațiile includeau refuzul de a efectua serviciul militar, de a fi mobilizați în activitățile de lucru colectiv în zilele de duminică, refuzul de a vota și de a se alătura Komsomolului. În contextul colectivizării agriculturii și a foametei, în cultura inochentistă apar zvonuri apocaliptice.
Pe lângă pozele menționate, dosarul ASIS, 019520, vol.2, mai conține încă două icoane inochentiste, o icoană hagiografică arhanghelistă și două broșuri.
