Description
This map, which was created by the Romanian interwar secret police, the Siguranța, shows the distribution of two banned religious groups, Nazarenes and Inochentists. The map is undated but appears together with other materials from 1938.
From the second half of 1938, the new Royal Dictatorship headed by King Carol pursued harsher policies towards religious sects and the Siguranța made a concerted effort to gather accurate data on sects in order to be able to plan operations and determine whether its actions were producing results. The data for maps such as this one was collected by local gendarme posts, which functioned as the eye and ears of the regime in the countryside. Local gendarme commanders regularly reported data upwards including the names and addresses of preachers, the locations of places of worship, numbers of adherents of the various banned groups in local settlements and numbers of reverts to Orthodoxy (this data was supplied to them by local Orthodox priests who issued certificates as proof of membership of the Orthodox Church). Based on this data, the secret police created maps, charts and tables showing the nationwide statistics and distribution of illegal sects.
This map comes from a Documentary file CNSAS, D015288, on Inochentism 1934-1943. This file also contains a number of press cuttings from the 1930s on Inochentism plus tables of statistics on produced by the Gendarmerie.

Această hartă, creată de Siguranța Statului în perioada interbelică, înfățișează răspândirea a două secte interzise, nazarinenii și inochentiștii. Harta nu este datată, dar apare împreună cu alte materiale din 1938.
Începând cu a doua jumătate a anului 1938, noua dictatură regală condusă de regele Carol a înăsprit măsurile împotriva sectelor religioase, iar Siguranța a depus eforturi concertate pentru a colecta date exacte despre acestea în vederea planificării operațiunilor și evaluării succesului acțiunilor sale. Datele folosite la alcătuirea hărților de tipul celei prezentate aici erau colectate de posturile de jandarmerie locale, „ochii și urechile” regimului în zonele rurale. Comandanții locali de jandarmerie raportau periodic informațiile superiorilor, inclusiv numele și adresele pastorilor, adresele lăcașurilor de cult, numărul de adepți ai diferitelor grupări ilegale din fiecare localitate și numărul de convertiți la ortodoxie (aceste informații le erau furnizate de preoții ortodocși din localitate, care emiteau certificate doveditoare ale apartenenței la credința ortodoxă). Pe baza acestor informații, poliția secretă alcătuia hărți, grafice și tabele statistice, ilustrând răspândirea sectelor ilegale la nivel național.
