Description
These images depicts a small icon that was confiscated by the secret police from an Old Calendarist believer. The first image shows the front of the icon, which portrays what seems to be the fight between good and evil, the holy trinity, angels, saints, numerous religious symbols, as well as two priests that are praying for the soul of a dying man. The second image shows the back of the small icon which has a short text. The first part of the text is indecipherable, but the second part states: “[...] Pray this prayer and feel that fear comes into your blood and body. Look at the dead man and how his soul is going up, towards the heavens.” It also mentions the name of the person to whom the icon belonged, which was “Păun”.
According to the police reports included in the file, Păun was a “mystical person, a fanatic for his faith which was the old style,” referring to his adherence to the pre-reform Julian Calendar. He sent numerous requests to the state authorities, asking for the reopening of the Old Calendarist church in Păunești, Vrancea county. The church was closed in 1971, at which point Păun began sending letters in which he pleaded for the legalization of the Old Calendarist church. Apart from this small icon, the file contains a few papers on which he wrote Psalms and prayers. It is not certain if these items were confiscated from him by the police or if he attached them to the letters that he sent to the authorities. However, the reports state that he was threatened by the police on numerous occasions due to his insistent letters in which he would sometimes include “mystical materials.”

Aceste imagini prezintă o icoană de mici dimensiuni ce a fost confiscată de poliția secretă de la un credincios vechi calendarist. Prima imagine prezintă fața icoanei și reflectă ceea ce pare a fi lupta dintre bine și rău, trinitatea, îngeri, sfinți, numeroase simboluri religioase, precum și doi preoți care se roagă pentru sufletul unui muribund. Cea de a doua poză prezintă reversul icoanei pe care este scris un scurt text. Prima parte a textului nu poate fi descifrată, dar cea de a doua parte spune:„ […] Ziceț rugăciunea și simțiți că apare o frică în sângie în trup. Priviț omul mort și sufletul cum se urcă sus acuma. Priviț cum e luat în rai”. Însemnarea menționează, de asemenea, numele persoanei căreia îi aparținea icoana, anume „Păun.” Conform rapoartelor poliției incluse în dosar, Păun era ”o persoana mistică, un fanatic pentru credința lui, care e stilul vechi,” referindu-se la aderența sa la calendarul iulian. Păun a trimis numeroase cereri autorităților statale, cerând redeschiderea bisericii vechi calendariste din Păunești, județul Vrancea. Biserica a fost închisă în 1971, moment în care Păun a început să trimită scrisori în care pleda pentru recunoașterea legală a bisericii vechi calendariste. Pe lângă această icoană de dimensiuni mici, dosarul conține câteva hârtii pe care Păun a scris Psalmi și rugăciuni. Nu se știe dacă aceste obiecte au fost confiscate de către poliție de la acesta, sau dacă el le-a atașat scrisorii trimise autorităților. Rapoartele menționează, totuși, că Păun a fost amenințat de poliție în numeroase ocazii datorită scrisorilor sale insistente în care adesea includea „materiale mistice”.
